Due to a forecasted storm surge the District of Sooke has decided to close Whiffin Spit public access effective 8 am on Saturday December 14.

That was announced today (one day ahead) at 2:20 pm by the District of Sooke.

High waves and elevated ocean water levels are anticipated to coincide with midday high tide, creating hazardous conditions along the shireline.

“Public safety is a top priority, and a site assessment will be conducted at 3 pm to determine if reopening is possible later in the day,” the District of Sooke stated in their news release today.

The storm surge issued by Environment Canada forecasts wave heights of up to 7 metres. Water levels may reach 100 cm above the highest astronomical tide.

Coastal flooding and dangerous wave activity are likely, particularly in low-lying areas.
