Of note for local residents, commuters and visitors to the Sooke area, Highway 14 will present some traffic slow-downs in-town at Church Road (called Goodmere Road on the waterfront south side).
Highway 14 (aka Sooke Road) is the one route in/out of the Sooke town with a population of more than 17,000. At that particular intersection is a gas station and small retail (next to a series of mid-size retail), and nearby is the Sooke RCMP detachment.
Church Road leads to within-Sooke residential areas, and Highway 14 at that point leads to the town core beyond which is the route out to recreational regions for hiking, fishing and summer getaways.
The region is popular, especially in summer, for recreational tourist activity.
July 20 to August 29:
Starting July 20, 2026 construction is scheduled to begin for required frontage upgrades associated with The Bayshore development at 6569 Sooke Road, near the intersection of Church Road.
Bayshore Landing (aka Harbourview One) is an 8-story mixed-use development featuring rental units and about 10,000 to 17,000 sq ft of commercial space.
Once up and running, the development will effectively extend what is considered to be the town core area of Sooke and provide rare public-access to harbour-level views.
Safer, more accessible travel:
The work includes improvements intended to support safer and more accessible travel along the corridor.
Traffic conditions will change as construction progresses. Drivers should expect:
- Two-way traffic to be maintained during daytime hours whenever possible
- Single-lane alternating traffic during overnight work on Highway 14
- Reduced speeds and changing lane configurations near the work zone
- Possible delays, particularly during evening travel
- Traffic-control personnel and construction signage directing road users safely through the area
Scope of Work:
- Constructing a new concrete sidewalk
- Installing a dedicated bus pullout
- Placing new asphalt
- Upgrading streetlighting
- Adjusting lane configurations to improve alignment
Work Hours and Timeline:
- Anticipated timeline: July 20 to August 29, 2026
- Weekday Hours: Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5 pm *and* overnight 7 pm to 6 am.
- No Weekend Impact: No night work on Saturdays or Sundays is currently anticipated
- Construction schedules may change due to weather, site conditions or regulatory approvals. Updates will be made available.
Construction noise:
The District recognizes that overnight construction can be disruptive for nearby residents, particularly when equipment, backup alarms and work lighting are required.
“We sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of neighbours as crews work overnight to reduce impacts on daytime travel, businesses and commuters,” says the District of Sooke in a traffic advisory.
Signage:
Roadside signage has been placed along Highway 14 to advise drivers of the upcoming construction.
Allow for additional travel time:
Please slow down, remain alert and follow all directions from traffic-control personnel. Allowing additional travel time will help reduce frustration and keep workers and other road users safe.
