The two-day Sooke Fall Fair got underway this morning Saturday September 7 at Sooke Community Hall. Indoor and outdoor displays attracted the crowds. Produce, hand-made crafts and other categories will receive awards.

This year’s theme is ‘Rooted in Tradition’, referencing the old traditions of hunting, fishing and gathering and providing for the basics of clothing and housing. These things are changing with time and technology, says Sooke Fall Fair President Ellen Lewers.

The opening ceremony was announced as being at 12:30 pm but took place a bit ahead of schedule. Speakers were Rose Dumont of T’Sou-ke Nation, Aliya Pierce, Randall Garrison, MP (Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke), Premier John Horgan, Juan de Fuca Electoral Area Director Mike Hicks, Sooke Fall Fair President Ellen Lewers and Sooke Mayor Maja Tait.

There was a presentation for Amanda Booth for 31 years of judging service.

Activities for kids include pony rides, carnival and games. There is pet parade on Sunday.
