Six injured in crash on Highway 1 Malahat

Crash occurred shortly before 4 pm on Highway 1 near Whittaker Road.

Update on August 15, 2025:

One of the passengers in the Corolla was killed, with the other three occupants sustaining varying degrees of injury, according to Shawnigan Lake RCMP. | See August 15, 2025 Shawnigan Lake RCMP news release.

A southbound white Toyota Corolla had collided with a black Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Both the driver and passenger in the pickup suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

Highway 1 was ultimately closed for about four hours.

The investigation is ongoing, and police ask anyone with information to call Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514. File # 2025-2471

As published on Thursday evening, August 14:

There was a vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of the Malahat stretch of Highway 1 this afternoon.

DriveBC indicated that the crash occurred shortly before 4 pm on Highway 1 near Whittaker Road. That’s about 3 km south of the Malahat summit.

A southbound Toyota Corolla collided with a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

According to posts on Facebook:

  • The collision appeared to have happened to a “white car making left hand turn to Spectacle lake misjudged traffic and got T-boned by a big truck” (Marsha Simard, approx 4:30 pm)
  • Passenger side crushed all airbags were inflated. (Shila Addie, approx 4:30 pm)

Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to six patients, who were transported to hospital, as reported by BC Emergency Health Services (BCHS). Two people were in critical condition and four were in stable condition.

Around 5:20 p.m., DriveBC provided an update, advising drivers to “watch for traffic control and expect major delays due to congestion.”

Traffic was heavily congested southbound into Victoria up to the position of the collision incident.

Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane and southbound lanes were blocked, as noted on DriveBC. Whittaker Rd could be used as a detour.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP responded just before 4 p.m.
