This is Mother’s Day weekend, and it’s also a high-profile rugby weekend in Langford on the west shore of Vancouver Island, BC.
Gathering from around the world are 12 teams competing Saturday May 11 and Sunday May 12 in the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series tournament being held at Westhills Stadium in Langford.
“Rugby Sevens is shaping up to be the best ever,” says Langford Mayor Stew Young. This is the fifth year that Langford is hosting the high-profile tournament, and this year with an expanded stadium: “The new stadium is creating a buzz around the events being played there.”
“The game should be well-attended and Canada always brings out a loud and cheering local fan base,” said Mayor Young, an avid sports promoter who thrives on competition: “And because the Canadian team won in Japan they will be regarded as the home team to beat.”
Mayor Young is leading Langford in the process of becoming national sports capital in Canada.
The gates open today May 11 at 9:45 am with the first match at 10:22 am between New Zealand and Russia. Canada plays their first match today at 11:28 against Brazil. Schedule, tickets and more game info all weekend at
