The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship is working to develop provincial flood policy guidance, and is seeking input on a variety of flood-related topics.
This work relates directly to the BC Flood Strategy, released on March 21, 2024. Written feedback will be accepted until December 20, 2024, 4 pm.
Four topics are under consideration:
- Wise practices for advancing First Nations and local government partnerships for integrated flood management
- Design guidelines for nature-based solutions for BC flood infrastructure
- Integrated flood management planning
- Economic assessments and decision-making for managed retreat in BC
Input from all people living in BC:
The Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) included a push about this in their e-news bulletin to municipalities and communities today, suggesting that input is requested.
BC Green Party Leader Sonia Furstenau today also encouraged municipalities to provide a wide range of input to the provincial government about their needs regarding climate change impacts.
All people living in British Columbia, including First Nations and local governments, and employers, employees, organizations, professionals, and Indigenous communities are invited to make written submissions on the BC Flood Strategy to BCFloodStrategy@gov.bc.ca before December 20, 2024, at 4 pm.
Written submissions should be no longer than 500 words per guidance topic in Word or PDF format.
Atmospheric river:
Last weekend (October 19 and 20) there was a lot of rainfall and flooding due to an atmospheric river in most part of southern BC including Vancouver Island. Three people are confirmed deceased (as announced by Premier David Eby on October 21) due to flooding, while two more persons are missing and presumed dead.
