Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre addressed his cacus in Ottawa today, one day aheaed of the 45th Parliament returning from summer break.
Since the failure of Poilievre to win his Ottawa-area seat in the April 28, 2025 he has taken ‘the long route’ through Alberta and is back. He noted that in the introduction of his 17-minute speech (first half in French, then again more briefly in English).
He said that the Liberals made a lot of promises to get elected but that they have not delivered. The new government has been in place starting in May (after the spring federal election).
“Our goal is a Canada where Canadians can afford their lives,” said Poilievre among his remarks to the members of parliament in the room.
He listed off crime, home building, immigration, the cost of groceries, “safer streets” and “solid borders” as areas where Conservatives would seek to make improvements.
He outlined the need for self-reliant Canada, removing bureaucracy to get large projects built that are “money-making projects, not money-losing projects”.
Fall sitting:
Parliament returns on Monday September 14 for a fall sitting through to December 12, 2025.
The Canadian Parliament has 343 seats, with 172 required to form a majority.
The Liberals have 169 seats (three seats short of a majority), Conservatives 144, Bloc 22, NDP 7, and Green 1.
The Liberals will need the support of the MPs of one or more other parties in order to get legislation passed. This is seen by some as the benefit of a minority government in that cooperation is needed to get things done.
That cooperation is usually thought to mean that the views of more than one party are possibly represented in the legislation.
