Enhanced drug coverage for people with diabetes and menopause starts March 1, 2026 in British Columbia.
This boost in coverage is made possible new with federal funding.
The announcement was delivered officially by BC Health Minister Josie Osbsorne this morning in Victoria.
Summary:
- The BC PharmaCare National Pharmacare Plan launches for provincial residents on Sunday, March 1, 2026
- The plan will cover the full cost of many diabetes medications and menopausal hormone therapy
- Nearly 570,000 British Columbians living with diabetes will be supported, as well as approximately 160,000 people with menopausal symptoms

Federal funding:
On March 6, 2025, the provincial government and Government of Canada signed an agreement for the implementation of national pharmacare in B.C., with the federal government providing up to $670 million in funding over three years.
Condition-specific:
- Diabetes: Covered medications include insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, such as glyburide and gliclazide, dapagliflozin, empagliflozin, saxagliptin, linagliptin and pioglitazone. [Editor’s note: there is a corelation between dietary intake, e.g. too much carbohydrate vs protein, to a higher incidence of diabetes in today’s society, as well as levels of exercise being variable in today’s lifestyle.]
- What’s covered as of Sunday, March 1, 2026: Insulins: Metformin; Glyburide; Gliclazide; Dapagliflozin; Empagliflozin and empagliflozin with metformin; Saxagliptin; Linagliptin; Pioglitazone
- Menopause: Oral, topical and vaginal menopausal hormone therapies are also covered. The Province already provides free contraceptives, and the same contraceptives will continue to be free under national pharmacare. [Editor’s note: There are also natural therapies for menopause. Any treatment for menopause allows affected women to have a more stabilized experience of health and therefore helps support employment, family activity and mobility.]
- What’s covered as of Sunday, March 1, 2026: Menopausal hormone therapies: Oral micronized progesterone; Vaginal estrogen; Topical estrogen and estrogen/progesterone (gels & patches); Oral estradiol; Oral conjugated estrogen; Oral medroxyprogesterone
Costs that are covered:
Diabetes: In 2022, Diabetes Canada determined estimated the following costs:
- up to $18,300 per year for Type 1 diabetes.
- up to $10,000 per year for Type 2 diabetes.
Menopause: Common pharmaceutical menopause hormone therapies (e.g., estrogen pills, patches, gels) cost from $240 up to $1,800 per year without insurance.

Kudos from AccessBC:
AccessBC’s public health care advocates are celebrating the launch of the National Pharmacare Plan in BC. The organization notes how this federal support builds on BC’s implementation of free prescription contraception for all British Columbians in April 2023.
“The successful uptake of BC’s groundbreaking free prescription contraception program has already demonstrated the transformative impact of removing financial barriers to basic health care,” says AccessBC Chair and co-founder Teale Phelps Bondaroff.
