The first annual pumpkin composting drive at Porcher Park Community Gardne has been a fabulous success.
Over 150 thanksgiving and Halloween pumpkins were delivered to Porcher Park Community Garden by Langford residents between October 15 and November 8. The drive continues for one more day (Sunday November 9).
All the jack-o-lanterns — the happy, scary and fun carved pumpkins — are now in the compost bin at Porcher Park Community Garden.
Food bank:
As well, there were some sizeable fully intact pumpkins — those will be taken to the Living Edge Westshore food bank.
A community effort:
The Urban Food Resilience Initiatives Society (UFRIS) thanks everyone who made the effort to donate their pumpkins to the community garden, and to the volunteers who relocated the donated pumpkins from outside the gate into the compost.
For soil enrichment:
This project was an effort to encourage composting instead of smashing, and it worked.
The goal of course is for soil enrichment for PPCG gardeners in 2026!
About the garden:
Porcher Park Community Garden is located at 828 Wren Place in Langford. It is the first city-owned community garden, operated by Urban Food Resilience Initiatives Society (UFRIS).
There are 31 growing boxes used by local families.
