On Easter morning, April 5, there was a fully involved structure fire in a home in the Rhodonite Drive area of Sooke around 5 am.
Fire crews (Sooke, Metchosin, Otter Point) suppressed and extinguished the fire.
The fire was on the second level of the single-family home.
Two occupants were located — sadly one individual succumbed to their injuries at the scene, and another was transported to hospital.
BC Emergency Health Services and Sooke RCMP (who responded at 5:21 am) were on scene.
The BC Coroners Service attended the scene. The Office of the Fire Commissioner, in coordination with the RCMP General Investigation Section and Sooke Fire Rescue, is investigating the cause of the fire.
Crews had cleared the scene by mid afternoon.
“Our thoughts are with the family and those affected by this incident. We extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time,” said Fire Chief Wayne Kennedy.
“This is a challenging situation for our community and for our responders, and we recognize the impact it has on everyone involved. I want to acknowledge the coordinated efforts of our crews and our mutual aid partners, and extend my appreciation for the care and professionalism demonstrated by all first responders on scene,” said Chief Kennedy.
