New NDP (interim) Leader Don Davies is moving fast to rebuild the party.
The NDP was diminished to seven MPs in the April 28, 2025 election, down from 25 who had been elected in 2021.
Davies was appointed as interim leader on May 5.

The party is now “reconnecting with working people, renewing its commitment to Canadians, and rebuilding for the future”, as stated by the party yesterday.
“This party was built by and for working people to fight for fairness, dignity, and opportunity,” said Davies. “That’s the foundation we will rebuild together.”
“I look forward to working with our caucus, our party, progressive allies and everyone ready to build a stronger, better, fairer Canada for everyone,” Davies stated.
Grassroots process:
Alongside a thorough review of recent results, Davies has pledged an open, grassroots process – meeting, listening, engaging – to shape the party’s next chapter with workers and communities at its heart.
“We need to take a hard look at how we got to where we are, and we need a clear view of where we’re going,” said Davies in a news release on May 7. “We need to reconnect with working people and show them that the NDP is their party, the one that fights and delivers for them.”
45th Parliament prep:
The NDP caucus has already begun meeting to coordinate its efforts in Parliament and will strategically use the balance of power it holds to push the government to deliver real results for people.
“We heard loud and clear from voters in every province and territory that life is too expensive and they want a strong economy in an independent Canada,” said Davies. “I’m honoured to lead our party during this crucial time to bring their voices to Parliament.”
The 45th Parliamentary session begins May 26 with a minority Liberal government led by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Speech from the Throne will be delivered by King Charles III on May 27.
Housing, health-care and jobs:
Davies highlighted several key priorities that will guide his leadership in the months ahead:
• Tackling the housing crisis with truly affordable homes;
• Expanding and strengthening public health care, including mental health services; and
• Fighting for good jobs and better wages in every part of the country.
