On New Year’s Eve around 10 pm the Cowichan Valley School District (SD79) was notified of a fire in the back pod of Alexander Elementary School.

The school is located at 2471 Beverly Street in Duncan. The school delivers public education to about 300 Kindergarten to Grade 7 students, across 15 classrooms.

North Cowichan Fire Department arrived at the scene quickly, says the Cowichan Valley School District in a news release today. The fire was prevented from spreading further into the school.

“While the cause of the fire is still unknown, first responders and the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP will continue to investigate,” says SD79.

Cowichan Valley School District board chair Cathy Schmidt expressed gratitude for the “quick work” of the North Cowichan Fire Department and “the significant resources they deployed” to ensure that school damaged was minimized.

The pod area incurred “significant fire and water damage” but the main building was not affected, says SD79.

The school district says that all students will be welcomed back to class after winter break, on Monday January 6.
