Tonight the SD62 Board of Education trustees voted in their new chair, Amanda Dowhy. She was also voted in as the SD62 rep to the BC School Trustees Association (BCSTA).
The new vice-chair is trustee Ebony Logins.
They will both serve in those positions until the December 2023 public board meeting when annual elections are held for the Chair and Vice Chair position.
Dowhy was interim chair over the summer:
Dowhy served as interim chair during the summer, until the resignation of Ravi Parmar was received. Parmar won the MLA seat for Langford-Juan de Fuca on June 24 and Parmar officially resigned from SD62 on July 27.
Dowhy was first elected to the SD62 board in the October 15, 2022 by voters in the Belmont Zone of SD62 (Langford, Colwood, Highlands and Metchosin). Logins was first elected to the SD62 board in the October 15, 2022 by voters in the Milne’s Landing Zone of SD62 (Sooke and Juan de Fuca).
By-election to fill vacant seat:
The one trustee vacancy opened by the resignation of former trustee Ravi Parmar has kick-started a by-election in the Belmont Zone. That SD62 by-election will be held October 14, 2023 for voters in Langford, Colwood, Highlands and Metchosin.
Tonight’s meeting was held in the SD62 administration building’s board office. The meeting 1-hour meeting was livestreamed via MS Teams.
The new board is leading the school district into a year with the highest-ever student population growth. Over 700 students are expected to be starting in SD62 schools this fall.
