This morning NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has suggested that the G7 conference being hosted in Canada June 15 to 17, 2025 instead be a summit about Trump.

Normally the G7 (Group of Seven) is a gathering of national leaders from advanced nations to discuss the sovereign interests of their countries. G7 is an intergovernmental political and economic forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States as well as the European Union.

Singh says it is irresponsible to invite the US president for a G7 summit at a time when the US president has been threatening the sovereignty of Canada, using the fentanyl crisis as a guise for undertaking economic warfare intended to destabilize Canada’s economy.

Trump’s economic actions since taking office on January 20 have also completely disregarded the current CUSMA (formerly NAFTA) trade agreement between Canada and the United (and Mexico).

Not unprecedented:

The proposed change in G7 membership is not a new idea. The G7 used to be the G8 before Russia was disbanded from the group.

Canada in the G7:

Canada assumed the presidency of the G7 on January 1, 2025. The G7 Leaders’ Summit will be held in Kananaskis, Alberta from June 15 to 17, 2025.

Originating from an ad hoc gathering of finance ministers in 1973, the G7 has since become a formal, high-profile venue for discussing and coordinating solutions to major global issues, especially in the areas of trade, security, economics, and climate change.

The Government of Canada says this year’s summit will include discussion of “managing rapidly evolving technologies”.
