An earthquake between 4.1 to 4.8 Magnitude was literally a wake-up call for some residents of the Greater Victoria area.
Natural Resources Canada (NRC) first advised the Magnitude as 4.8 but their March 3, 2025 Earthquake information page currently shows 4.1 Magnitude.

The earthquake event at 5:02 am Pacific Time was at at depth of just 17 km, and only 42 km east of the south coast of Vancouver Island near Sidney, BC.
Location of the quake: 48.6 North / 122.82 West.
The quake was “lightly felt” in and around Victoria and Vancouver, says NRC. Within the Greater Victoria area it was reportedly felt out in the west shore region including East Sooke.
Alerts:
Some people are posting in social media that they did not receive an alert on their phone.
A lot of resources and expertise have been invested by various levels of government and agencies. However, at best, an alert would come just seconds ahead of the actual shaking. This reinforces the need to have ‘muscle memory’ (earthquake drill practice) of how to respond when the earth starts to shake.
