“This grant funding will allow us to protect our community from the growing threat of wildfires,” says Chris Aubrey, Langford Fire Chief. “We can take proactive measures, such as clearing hazardous fuels, strengthening defensible space, and engaging residents in mitigation efforts that will make a real difference and create a safer city.”

Building on the foundation of the City’s Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan, the City of Langford has taken bold action to advance its wildfire mitigation efforts.

Demonstrating a strong commitment to climate resilience led to the success of the City’s application for the grant through the Intact Municipal Climate Resiliency Grant program.

FireSmart activities:

The grant will fund projects to manage vegetation and create fire-safe zones around homes, reducing wildfire risks and enhancing community resilience.

Drop off vegetative yard waste:

As part of this effort, the City will introduce a ‘pop-up’ free yard waste pop-up drop-off service to assist residents in removing hazardous vegetation from their properties. The pop-up will be available at 2955 Sooke Lake Road on three Saturdays: November 15, 22 and 29 — from 11 am to 3 pm.

The site will only be open to the public during these designated times and will be monitored to ensure safe and appropriate use. In addition, educational workshops will be offered to promote FireSmart™ yard maintenance and safe disposal practices.

Collaboration is key:

“This grant enables the City to implement meaningful steps to protect the community and empower residents to participate in reducing fire risk,” said Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson. “This program demonstrates what can be achieved when municipalities collaborate with partners like Intact Financial Corporation to build climate resilience from the ground up. Together, we are creating a safer, better prepared, and more resilient community for everyone.”

“In Langford, residents know the importance of preparation. Communities are working hard to reduce wildfire risks, and this program makes those efforts more accessible, organized, and effective. This initiative supports the kind of grassroots leadership that contributes to keeping residents safer year after year. It’s local resilience in action,” said Rosa Nelson, Vice President, Business Development, Western Canada, Intact Financial Corporation.
