A new installation of lifesaving equipment is being undertaken at lakes located in Langford.
The action is being taken to improve public water safety at local popular lake recreation spots in the west shore municipality.
“Council fully supports all initiatives that promote water safety and lifesaving efforts,” said Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson, in a news release on July 5.
“We are committed to creating awareness and providing a safer environment for residents and visitors to enjoy local lakes,” he said.
This comes after a drowning incident at Langford Lake on June 15; the teen who was rescued died a few days later in hospital.
Donation of life rings:
The City has thanked Langford residents Ryan Oakley and Brittany Loomis for their generous donation of four life rings.
The City is in the process of installing the donated life rings at the main swimming areas of Langford Lake and has also purchased Public Access Liferings directly from the Lifesaving Society.
Multiple locations:
The life ring installation at Leigh Place dock was done first, followed by installations at Scouts Point, Lake Park off Goldstream Avenue, and Lake Point Park were scheduled for later in the day Friday.
Life rings will also be installed at the Florence Lake boat launch dock, and at Glen Lake Beach Park and Glen Cove dock early next week.
In the upcoming days, the City will also be installing new signage from the Lifesaving Society to improve public safety.
WaterSmart safety:
The City of Langford encourages residents and visitors to review WaterSmart ways to enjoy the outdoors.
Swimming lessons are offered by the YMCA and Westshore Parks and Recreation.
