The City of Langford is in full attendance at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention in Vancouver this week.
The convention runs September 16 to 20.
Attending from Langford is all of council — Mayor Scott Goodmanson, and councillors Kimberley Guiry, Colby Harder, Mark Morley, Lillian Szpak, Mary Wagner and Keith Yacucha — and Chief Administrative Officer Darren Kiedyk.
Over four days, the Langford mayor and council have attended 16 meetings with ministers and ministry staff, as well as several other meetings with additional organizations and groups, says Mayor Goodmanson.
Councillor Mary Wagner attended a session called ‘Youth Voices: Catalyzing Climate Action and Policy Reform’, as well as the large urban communities forum which undertook a discussion on the BC housing legislation that requires housing to be densified in transit-oriented areas of larger cities.
The City of Langford delegation is meeting with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure this morning.
This morning the featured keynote speaker to the full UBCM audience was long-time media personality George Stroumboulopoulos.
Langford’s delegation is large enough to cover today’s afternoon town halls:
- ‘Stronger Public Services’ will be led by Minister of Health Adrian Dix, Minister of Citizens’ Services George Chow, and Minister of Education and Child Care Rachna Singh.
- Housing will be led by Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon and Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Rob Fleming.
- Emergency Preparedness will be led by Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Bowinn Ma, Minister of Forests Bruce Ralston, and Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship Nathan Cullen.
UBCM Executive:
As for action in UBCM leadership, today a call for nominations off the floor for the position of UBCM President and the other Table Officer positions will take place today September 18 at 10:25 am.
City of Langford Councillor Keith Yacucha is running as Director at Large. For First VP, nomination is Prince George city councillor Cori Ramsay.
