West Shore RCMP is reporting a noticeable increase in motor vehicle collisions this month to date, August 1 to 19.
The West Shore RCMP serves an area that includes Colwood, Highlands, Langford, Metchosin, View Royal, Songhees First Nation, and Esquimalt First Nation.
Three per day, higher than 2024:
Officers responded to 61 collisions in those 19 days (on average, that’s approximately three collisions per day).
That happens to be approximately an 24% increase compared to the same time period in 2024.
Two fatalities, 12 injuries:
Of the 61 collisions reported in August 1 to 19, 2025, the outcomes included:
- 2 collisions resulted in fatalities (Hwy 14 headon collision on Aug 3 | Admirals Rd at Maple Bank Rd pedestrian struck at intersection on Aug 14);
- 12 collisions resulted in injuries;
- 7 collisions involved property damage exceeding $10,000;
- 40 collisions involved property damage under $10,000;
- 10 collisions were classified as hit-and-run or failure to remain at the scene.
“Any increase in collisions is concerning, especially when they involve serious injuries or loss of life. On August 11 alone, there were nine collisions reported in one day,” said Cpl. Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Officer, West Shore RCMP.
Focus on the roadway:
“We want to remind drivers to keep their focus on the roadway and abide by traffic laws,” said Saggar in a news release this week.
“The West Shore RCMP will continue to conduct proactive traffic enforcement to target dangerous driving behaviours and improve road safety for all motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians in our community,” said Cst Saggar.
Saggar added that distracted driving was not highlight as a cause in the collisions outlined for August. “However, it does remain one of the top reasons for collisions. Not necessarily refering to people on their devices, but simply paying more attention to their surroundings and other vehicles while on the roadway,” Saggar tells Island Social Trends.
Reporting a driving complaint:
Anyone who observes dangerous driving behaviour, and can immediately report it, please find a safe place to pull over and call 9-1-1 right away so that RCMP may dispatch officers to the area.
If you are reporting a driving complaint after the fact, that can be done online ‘Crime Reporting’ or by calling the non-emergency line at 250-474-2264.
