The federal Greens have brought forward a 20-year-old University of Victoria student as their candidate in the high-profile Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke (ESS) riding.

Ben Homer-Dixon says he believes that young people deserve strong representation in shaping the future.

“I want to help amplify youth voices on the issues that matter most—especially climate change, social justice, and economic equity.” he stated in the Green Party’s news release.

Homer-Dixon comes late the ESS race which has already heated up between NDP candidate Maja Tait and a recent high-profile Conservative candidate Grant Cool. So far there is no Liberal candidate in ESS.

“My interest in how humans engage with the natural world began early, but it deepened during high school fieldwork, where I conducted empirical research on the creeks, forests, and urban areas of Vancouver Island. Now a first-year Geography student at the University of Victoria, I plan to complete a major in Geography with a minor in Ocean Sciences,” said Homer-Dixon.

Climate and larger crises:

He says he is also passionate about how climate and social challenges affect civic engagement and intergenerational equity.

He talked about the tendency to avoid large-scale crises as contributing factor to collective inaction in a TEDx talk titled “Someone Else’s Problem.”

Ben Homer-Dixon has family roots in Saanich and Metchosin.

Support from the party:

“This young man has a good future ahead,” says former BC Green Party candidate David Evans, who lives in the ESS riding.

“I strongly support Ben and I look forward to working with him, knocking on doors and introducing this remarkable young man and his Green principles to ESS,” says Evans.

According to Evans, Homer-Dixon was chosen by Green Party Co-Leader Elizabeth May to run in this election in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke.
