As Emergency Preparedness Week wraps up in BC, the District of Sooke has issued some information about evacuation routes.
On any day of the week, Sooke residents and businesses are dependent on one-route-in, one-route out. That route is Highway 14 (aka Sooke Road if you live in the area).
Sooke’s geography provides three key evacuation routes and planning options. In any emergency, the safest route will be communicated based on the situation, says the District of Sooke. They offer these options:
• Eastbound through Highway 14 to Langford and Victoria
• South-east through Metchosin
• Westbound through Port Renfrew
In an extremely rare scenario where a full community evacuation is necessary, plans would be put in place to support staggered evacuation, reduce congestion, and ensure the safety of all residents. This could include:
• Group transportation options
• Air and water evacuation, coordinated with provincial and federal partners, as needed
• Alternate evacuation routes
The District uses multiple channels to communicate alerts, including:
• Alert! emergency notification system
• District website: sooke.ca/emergencyprep
• Local media and radio stations
