Esquimalt Road is shut down between Head Street and Dunsmuir Road due to a gas leak at 852 Esquimalt Road.
The gas leak was from a gas line being hit.
Traffic detours are in place, said the Township of Esquimalt in a news release around 12:55 pm.
Fortis BC and Esquimalt Fire Rescue Services crews were on site promptly. At first, the road was expected to be closed for the next 2 to 4 hours.
Any needed evacuations were evaluated. Including at nearby school Ecole Brodeur.
Followup:
Neighbouring residences and staff and students at Ecole Victor Brodeur were asked to shelter in place after an excavator hit a gas line in the 800-block of Esquimalt Road.
FortisBC capped the leak and embarked on repairs as Esquimalt Fire Rescue remained on scene for safety and ventilation, said Acting Fire Chief Neal Widdifield.
Some traffic got rolling by 2 pm.
Shops in the area closed for the afternoon.
Fortis BC issued a statement: “We would also like to remind the public that the majority of damages to our gas system are preventable – always contact BC 1 Call before digging to gather information on the location of buried gas lines and other utilities. Approximately 90 per cent of damages to our gas lines are preventable by following safe excavation practices.”
