Esquimalt by-election coming up April 5

The Township of Esquimalt is accepting nominations for the office of councillor. The deadline is coming up on Friday February 28, 2025.

Information about voting opportunities, elector qualifications and more is available at Esquimalt.ca/elections.

So far three people have submitted their applications: Meagan Brame, James Myers, and Kody Thomson.

Interested persons can obtain information on the requirements and procedures for making nominations including nomination documents from the Esquimalt Municipal Hall, 1229 Esquimalt Road, during regular office hours until the close of the nomination period at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Vacancy since October 2024:

The council vacancy is a result of former Councillor Darlene Rotchford’s resignation when she was elected to the provincial legislature in the October 2024 provincial election. [See Darlene Rotchford delivers slam dunk for the BC NDP in Esquimalt-Colwood – Oct 27, 2024]

The councillor who wins the April 5, 2025 by-election in the Township of Esquimalt will serve until the next scheduled Local General Election on October 17, 2026.

There are two advance voting days on March 26 and April 2. Mail ballots provide an additional voting option.

Who can apply:

A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day, April 5, 2025;
  • Canadian citizen;
  • Resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately preceding the day nomination papers are filed; and
  • Not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or being nominated for, being elected to or holding the office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

About Esquimalt council:

The township is served by six councillors and one mayor. Barb Desjardins has been on Esquimalt councl since 2005, first being elected as mayor in 2008 (re-elected in 2011, 2014 and 2018). She is Esquimalt’s longest consecutive serving Mayor. She served as the Board Chair for the Capital Regional District [CRD] in both 2016 and 2017.

Like other local governments in B.C., the municipality is charged with providing services for residents like fire protection, infrastructure maintenance, waste management, and maintenance of parks and green spaces as outlined in B.C.’s Community Charter.
