Earthquake Oct 19 puts BC on short-lived alert for tsunami

A 7.5 magnitude (upgraded from 7.4) earthquake occurred about 55 miles south east of Sand Point, Alaska around 3 pm today Monday October 19.

At first Emergency Info BC said on Twitter an assessment was in progress to determine if a tsunami threat exists for BC, asking people to stand by.

Around 4:20 pm they confirmed that no tsunami threat for BC.

“Even though this was a non-event for us, it is a good reminder that we live in a seismically-active areas,” says Jeri Grant, Coordinator, Juan de Fuca Emergency Program.

“We should have a plan as to what we would do if we had an earthquake an possible tsunami,” she told Island Social Trends today.
