In the wake of the resignation of former Canadian Culture and Identity Minister Steven Guilbeault, there will be a cabinet swearing-in or possibly mini cabinet shuffle today at 3 pm Eastern (12 noon Pacific).

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Governor General Mary Simon will be in attendance at the event at Rideau Hall today.

Guilbeault resigned over what he sees as a departure from — if not a complete break from — the federal climate policy that he led as the Environment Minister under the previous Liberal government leadership under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Guilbeault’s departure from cabinet came within hours of the prime minister signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) about a potential pipeline project from Alberta to the northwest coast of British Columbia.

Roles to fill:

Guilbeault had also been Carney’s Quebec Lieutenant, Liberal Party of Canada and Minister Responsible for Official Languages. He was also Minister responsible for the Parks Canada Agency.

Carney may reappoint someone to those roles as part of shoring up the Liberal base in Quebec.
