Earlier this week, a young person riding a bicycle was killed in a collision with a pickup truck towing a boat in Mill Bay.

The incident happened just after 6:30 pm (therefore still in daylight hours) on Monday July 12 at the corner of Benko Road and Kearny Place.

The young resident of Mill Bay was pronounced dead at the scene by BC Ambulance Service paramedics. Also on scene were the Shawnigan Lake RCMP and the Mill Bay Fire Department.

“This collision remains under investigation, however initial investigation leads us to believe the cyclist failed to stop at the stop sign and made a left (northbound) turn onto Benko Road,” said Shawnigan Lake RCMP Detachment Commander Tim Desaulniers. “The driver of the pickup truck was unable to stop in time and collided with the cyclist.”

“The driver is co-operating with the investigation and initially it does not appear to be any criminality in this tragic collision.”

The name of the youth will not be released.
