Playgrounds in parks are now temporary closed throughout the Greater Victoria area, it was announced today March 20 by the Capital Regional District (CRD).

Earlier this week they closed recreation centres and other CRD facilities.

These dramatic closures are due to an attempt by public health officials to reduce the rate of community spread of the COVID-19 virus, so as to ‘flatten the curve’ (i.e. slow down the rate of infection so that the health care system can maintain its ability to respond).

Public parks remain open, but CRD strongly recommends that visitors follow appropriate protocols outlined by the Provincial Health Officer, particularly social distancing, i.e. stay 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet) apart from other people.

Note, the COVID-19 virus can remain active on physical surfaces (like metal and plastic) for several hours, and all viruses survive longer in cooler temperatures (below the human body temperature of 37 degrees Celcius).
