The Craigflower Community and Performing Arts Centre in View Royal — owned by the Victoria Highland Games Association (VHGA) — has received $325,000 in provincial funding to complete their interior infrastructure requirements.

That includes kitchen equipment, tables and chairs, and audiovisual equipment, says VHGA President Jim Maxwell. The work is expected to be completed by August, says Maxwell.

Another $100,000 was accumulated by VHGA through fundraising which will be used this spring to complete grading, plantings and garden irrigation, says Maxwell. That work started yesterday and is expected to be completed by mid-summer.

Official opening back in January:

The Craigflower Community and Performing Arts Centre building was officially opened on January 19, an event attended by Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport Lana Popham, local MLA Mitzi Dean (Esquimalt-Metchosin) and View Royal Mayor Sid Tobias. That was the first event.

There was also a women in construction evening event held there in February. Other events like the Robbie Burns dinner and some weddings are held there.

Wonderful place to gather:

Today Minister Dean was pleased to announce the additional provincial funding which is provided to support projects for building and upkeep of tourism infrastructure across BC.

“The Craigflower Community Centre is a wonderful place for people to gather, celebrate, and connect,” said Mitzi Dean, MLA for Esquimalt-Metchosin. “This funding will support the exciting work the Centre is doing as they continue to develop this new space for our community.”

Supporting tourism diversity:

Today’s investment is a $30 million investment on top of the already $15 million allocated to tourism infrastructure projects for 2023, to continue our government’s support for a strong, diverse tourism industry throughout B.C.

This funding will help support a more sustainable year-round tourism economy for B.C. that attracts people from all over the globe, says Minister Dean. The more than 90 projects funded provincially are shovel-ready and will be able to hit the ground running thanks to this funding.
