The Colwood Fire Department is currently accepting applications for Paid-on-Call firefighters.
Men and women who wish to apply must be age 19 or older.
Applicants don’t need to be Colwood residents, however preference may be given to those who live the West Shore or within a reasonable distance radius.
Community service and getting some valuable training are two of the reasons people apply for this work.
Training required:
Those who receive a conditional offer will be invited to complete additional training over a 4-week orientation period and participate in three night shift ride-alongs. Once accepted, Colwood firefighters take part in regular training on each night shift and can access ongoing opportunities for professional development.
Compensation:
Paid-on-Call firefighters receive compensation when they attend a scheduled 12-hour night shift, an emergency call out, or in-person training outside of regular night shift training.
They are provided opportunities for casual Firefighter employment, and may apply for internal Career Firefighter positions that may come up.
About Colwood Fire:
Colwood’s Fire Department has been protecting Colwood residents since 1946, providing key public safety services including Emergency Fire Rescue Response, Fire Prevention/Education, Fire Safety Inspections, Firefighter Training, and Fleet Maintenance.
The City says the Colwood community is well served by approximately 40 dedicated and experienced firefighters. All members are certified fire suppression and rescue professionals trained under the British Columbia firefighters program.
Inter-regional:
Colwood Fire also works seamlessly with the Langford and View Royal Fire Departments through Mutual Aid and Auto Aid Agreements. This ensures that when someone in our community needs help, emergency responders are there for them.
As communities grow with more people there are taller buildings and multiple calls become more frequent. The equipment and resources will be available among the various departments to respond rapidly and appropriately.
How to apply:
There is more information about Colwood’s Paid-on-Call Firefighter program online or contact any Chief Officer by phone at 250-478-8321 or email to firedept@colwood.ca .
