As US President Trump heads toward a meeting later this week with Russian President Putin, today Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In the last day or so Trump has said he doesn’t know how the chat with Putin will go.

Trump wants to see an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, saying for months that the loss of life is tragic. His one-on-one meeting with Putin will possibly be a critical turning point for the possible resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, at the very least perhaps a ceasefire.

Carney and Zelenskyy two leaders today agreed on the “categorical imperatives of ending Russia’s barbaric war of aggression and establishing a just and lasting peace and security for Ukraine” as stated by the Prime minister in a readout today.

It is generally believed by democratic nations (particularly the Nordic countries, Europe and Canada) that helping Ukraine maintain its sovereignty is essential to maintaining western democracy.

Over three years of war:

The war launched by Russia against Ukraine started over three years ago, in February 2022.

“The Prime Minister and the President welcomed the leadership of President Trump and the United States in working toward securing peace in Ukraine in the context of upcoming negotiations,” said Carney in the statement from his office today.

Carney and Zelenskyy spoke in person here in Canada in June, during the G7 Summit in Alberta.

War and economics:

Russia has been taking Ukrainian territory since 2014 (starting in the Crimera area).

Zelenskyy has told Trump in recent days that no deal will be made about Ukraine without Ukraine being involved. Russia has proven itself as using war to get what it wants, whereas the western democracies use economics and politics.

Ukraine to make its own decisions:

The Prime Minister endorsed the recent statement issued by European leaders on the same. The two leaders underscored that decisions on the future of Ukraine must be made by Ukrainians, that international borders cannot be changed by force, that diplomatic engagement must be reinforced by continued pressure on Russia to end its aggression, and the need for robust and credible security to enable Ukraine to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Funding to Ukraine:

Prime Minister Carney affirmed Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine, as announced in June.

“The Prime Minister underscored Canada’s robust military and financial aid to Ukraine, including $2 billion in new military support and the disbursement of a $2.3 billion loan in funding to help rebuild Ukraine’s infrastructure and public systems. Last week, Canada, the European Union, and the United Kingdom announced they intend to lower the price cap for Russian crude oil – weakening Russia’s ability to fund its illegal war,” it was stated by Carney’s office today.

Returning Ukrainian children:

As Co-Chairs of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, Canada and Ukraine renew their call for Russia to immediately and unconditionally return Ukrainian children who have been unlawfully deported or forcibly transferred from Ukraine.

Those children have been raised as Russians ever since.

Coalition of the Willing, along with Trump:

Prime Minister Carney confirmed that Canada will continue to co-operate closely with the Coalition of the Willing, President Trump and the United States of America, and with President Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine, for peace and security in Ukraine and Europe.
