Prime Minister Mark Carney and Joni Mitchell couldn’t possibly have swapped more mutual accolades with each other over the course of a few minutes.
Carney introduced the music legend on stage at the 2026 Juno Awards ceremony in Hamilton this evening, and stood by holding the Lifetime Achievement Award for Mitchell as she delivered remarks.
The aging Canadian music star — now 82 years old — Mitchell suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015. She had relearn to talk and walk and now uses one hand to hold a cane.
Carney remained on stage during a live musical tribute performance by Sarah McLachlan and Allison Russell — a medley of songs approved by Mitchell, who chimed in a bit at the end herself, wrapping up with ‘(they paved paradise) and put up a parking lot’ from her infamous Big Yellow Taxi.
In the live CBC broadcast, Mitchell said that Carney is a blessing for Canada, no doubt referring to his strategy to steer Canada in new directions in a world facing a range of new and intense challenges. As well, there could be a comparison to US leadership in there: “You guys are so fortunate.”
As one of the most influential singer-songwriters to emerge from the 1960s Canadian folk music circuit, Mitchell became known for her highly personal lyrics and unconventional compositions, which grew to incorporate elements of pop, jazz, rock, and other genres.
Mitchell said tonight that she’s glad to be home in Canada (she had moved to the United States in 1965). She considers it a positive outcome that she is now not having to deal with a lot of men (of the music industry) — her care nurses are all women.
Some of her greatest hits are Big Yellow Taxi and Both Sides Now.
Mitchell was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
Trademark Carney:
Carney gave some of his trademark deliveries… ‘I’m almost done’ and the mock eye roll to confer humility when others praise him.
For many of the younger people in the audience who may not follow mainstream news this could well have been the first time they’d even seen their country’s prime minister in performance mode in his banker’s suit attire.
Earlier in the two-hour show Carney was shown in the live broadcast sitting alongside Mitchell in the audience to watch the performances.
Political exposure:
The sort of political exposure that Carney got on national live TV tonight — to the broadest possible audience — can’t be in any way an impediment to his political career or the profile of the ‘new Liberal government’.
Carney became Canada’s 24th prime minister just over a year ago after leading the Liberals to victory in the April 28, 2025 federal election.
