The Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program is part of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy.
“That’s the federal government’s commitment to help young people—particularly those facing barriers to employment—gain the skills, work experience and abilities they need to transition successfully into the labour market,” says Alistair MacGregor, MP (Cowichan-Malahat-Langford).
CSJ is delivered annually by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).
Through CSJ, employers are provided funding to support quality summer work experiences for young people age 15 to 30.
For the upcoming year, jobs can start as early as April 21, 2025 or as late as July 21, 2025
These jobs are intended to provide youth with opportunities to develop and improve their skills, respond to national and local priorities and improve access to the labour market for youth, especially those who face barriers to employment.
Program over the years:
The program provides funding to businesses to hire the students and provide on-the-job experience and training. This can be at some cost to the business but it’s a way for business to give-back and contribute to the economic ecosystem.
During the pandemic the employer’s fee was covered 100%, then it was reduced to 75% and now is back to 50%. For non-profits the wage coverage may still be at 100% (to be confirmed).
Employers from not-for-profit organizations and the public sector can apply, as well as private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees.
Applications online:
Employers interested in applying for CSJ 2025 funding can submit their applications electronically via the Grants and Contributions Online Services (GCOS) portal.
Applications opened November 19, 2024 and will close next week on December 19, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Creating a GCOS account is a one-time process that allows organizations to apply for various funding opportunities with Employment and Social Development Canada in a secure web environment.
Youth will be able to search for jobs available in their communities through the Job Bank website and app.
