Canada continues to stand by Ukraine.
Today Prime Minister Mark Carney participated in a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing alongside the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Coalition discussed the meeting between President Trump, European leaders, the NATO Secretary General, and President Zelenskyy that was held yesterday in Washington. Canada was not invited to that meeting.
Security guarantees:

At the August 18 White House meeting, leaders welcomed the openness of the United States to providing security guarantees to support long-term peace and security for Ukraine and Europe. That sentiment was repeated today in the virtual meeting that Carney also attended.
“This approach is consistent with the principles of no decisions about Ukraine being taken without Ukraine and no decisions about Europe being taken without Europe,” said Carney in a readout from his office today.
Canada’s involvement:
“Canada’s steadfast commitment to supporting the efforts for ending the war in Ukraine includes further diplomatic engagement, continued military and economic pressure on Russia to end its aggression, and close co-ordination with President Zelenskyy on the development of robust and credible security guarantees,” the readout said from Carney’s office today.
Canada not being at the table yesterday with Trump and the European leaders likely stems from Trump’s displeasure at the resistance that Canada has been showing to the United States during the ongoing trade war that the US launched against Canada earlier this year.
But Canada’s northern border is proximal to Russia over Arctic waters and Canada is part of NATO. Canada has the largest diaspora of Ukrainians of anywhere in the world. These are just some of the good reasons to include Canada in future deliberations with the United States regarding Ukraine.
Funds for Ukraine:
Canada as well will offer further military and financial support for Ukraine. At the G7 in June Carney announced funding for Ukraine as $2 billion in military support & a $2.3 billion loan.

Getting the children back home:
As Co-Chair of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, Canada will intensify its work with Ukraine, European partners, and the United States to secure the immediate and unconditional return of Ukrainian children.
“Canada also welcomes the new appeal to President Putin by the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, to consider the plight of children in ending this war,” stated the Prime Minister in today’s readout.
