Built Green Canada is an organization is focused on sustainability in the residential building sector, offering third-party certification programs across Canada for single family, single family renovations, as well as high density and high density renovations, including mixed-use, with a communities program under development.

As the world learns during COVID-19 that many things about the planet and the economy need to change, Built Green feels that their programs provide choices on ways to achieve energy efficiency and then go beyond to six other critical areas of sustainable building, including water and waste management, for a more holistic approach to sustainable building practices.

They work alongside the builder to help them improve incrementally, both with energy performance and overall sustainability.

While the residential building sector does not produce the highest percentage of GHG emissions, this industry has the ability to move the conversation forward and motivate behavioural changes, build more sustainably, and help jurisdictions meet their climate mitigation goals, says the organization that began in 2003.

Thanking construction industry frontline workers:

They feel that the construction industry is moving forward safely and responsibly, providing healthier homes and contributing to the economy.

In their current newsletter, Built Green thanks “all the industry’s frontline workers who continue building better, more sustainable homes as the COVID-19 pandemic continues”. They specify builders, trades, suppliers, energy advisors, inspectors, warranty providers, and others who support ‘those on the ground’ including associations and government.

Built Green certification requires various aspects of sustainable building that take a holistic approach. That includes energy and goes beyond to materials and methods, indoor air quality, ventilation, waste management, water conservation, and business practices.

National industry leadership:

Built Green Canada is an industry-driven, national, non-profit organization committed to working with builders interested in responsible sustainability practices in the residential building sector. The organization offers programs for single family, single family renovations, high density (including multi-storey, residential tower, and mixed-use), and high density renovation projects, with a communities program under development.

Built Green Canada began in 2003, and has grown its representation to include Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, and has now expanded into Manitoba.
