A public session to hear a presentation called Building Cities Better: Improving Urbanism In A Time Of Climate Change And Housing Need will be hosted by the City of Langford.
The two-hour evening event on Wednesday May 17 (rescheduled from Monday April 24) will be held at Belmont Secondary School, 7 to 9 pm.
The free presentation by Brent Toderian of Urbanworks in Vancouver will look at how cities like Langford can address both climate action and housing need through good urban design, active transportation, and place-making.
Toderian is billed as “an internationally respected practitioner and thought-leader on urbanism and city building with over 30 years of experience”.
Sustainability, climate-resilient:
The City of Langford says they hope this thought-provoking presentation will be the start of an ongoing conversation about how Langford can continue to progress in a way that contributes to the creation of a vibrant, climate-resilient, healthy, cost-effective and sustainable community.
Shift in direction:
Several of the Langford city councillors have already excitedly posted the urbanism presentation invitation on their Twitter feeds.
The new council is taking a distinctly different approach to urban development than did the previous Council that went with a business-first approach.
One of the Langford city councillors – Colby Harder – is herself deeply involved with aspects of urban planning in her work with the Capital Regional District (CRD); she was instrumental in getting the walk-roll to school movement launched within the Sooke School District (SD62) in the west shore. Councillor Keith Yacucha is a business instructor at Camosun College.
