There will be some big changes at the BC Legislature tomorrow due to the Tumbler Ridge shooting.
The Throne Speech has been scheduled for months to take place on Thursday February 12.
Yesterday’s shooting in the small northern BC town of Tumbler Ridge has now led the BC Legislature to change plans.
Official statement:
Mike Farnworth, Government House Leader; Á’a:líya Warbus, Official Opposition House Leader; and Rob Botterell, BC Greens House Leader, have released the following joint statement on changes to events in the legislature over the coming days in reflection of the tragic events in Tumbler Ridge:
“The horrific shooting and tragic loss of life in Tumbler Ridge have devastated this small community and impacted people across B.C., Canada and around the world.
“In recognition of these events, the planned Throne Speech for tomorrow will not be delivered.
“Thursday, Feb. 12 will be proclaimed a day of mourning in the province of British Columbia.
“At noon, the legislative assembly will stand for a moment of silence in honour of the victims in Tumbler Ridge, their families and the entire community. The house will then adjourn.
“At 2 p.m. the lieutenant governor will deliver a speech in the house dedicated to the people of Tumbler Ridge, followed by brief legally required procedures.
“The people of British Columbia mourn together with the people of Tumbler Ridge. We are united and will continue to ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days.”
Next week:
Next week, after Family Day long weekend, BC Budget 2026 will be delivered on Tuesday February 17.
