This weekend the BC NDP will meet for their biennial party convention.
This year sees BC in the midst of significant economic change. At the 2023 convention there was speculation as to the economic impacts of the incoming Trump administration, but those were early days for big shifts in BC’s and Canada’s economy.
In 2023 Premier David Eby was only one year into his leadership as premier and the 2024 provincial election lay ahead. He inherited a majority government from former Premier John Horgan, but after November 2024 the realities and challenges of running a minority government have consumed a lot of time apart from the regular business of government.
Now near the end of 2025, Eby is leading the province in a direction of being ‘the economic engine of Canada’ and suddenly the long-standing (and recently increased) softwood lumber is finally becoming a national concern. BC now has four of the country’s 11 major projects on the federal government’s National Projects list which Premier Eby is pleased about.

Convention schedule:
Gathering at the Victoria Conference Centre, party leadership and members will follow a three-day schedule:
Nov 14: WGRC Convention and YND Convention
Nov 14-16: Convention
Nov 15: Leader’s Reception
The BC NDP Convention will kick-off with a reception this evening, with formal convention programming on Saturday and Sunday.
There are standing committees on Agriculture & Food Security as well as Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity, and IBPOC. There are regional caucuses and a caucus for people living with disabilities.
Resolutions are debated and voted on at conventions but are not necessarily followed by the party or (in this case) the government of the day.

Leadership review & vote:
A party leader leadership review and vote is required within two years of being in the role. Eby told media today that he expects to do well on the vote this weekend.
Speeches:
There will be a John Horgan Tribute on Saturday morning [Also see: Former Premier John Horgan leaves an enduring legacy in BC].
BC NDP Leader David Eby will deliver a speech in the afternoon around 2 pm, and later around 4 pm federal NDP Leader Don Davies will address the convention.
On Sunday Sussanne Skidmore, president of the BC Federation of Labour, will address the convention as well as an address by LaToia Jones, Senior VP, Hustle.
Closing remarks will be delivered by first-term MLA Sunita Dhir (Vancouver-Langara) who is also currently the Parliamentary Secretary for International Credentials.
