As the BC Liberals ramp up their by-election campaign in Nanaimo, candidate Tony Harris will be joined by BC Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson for a campaign event on Saturday, January 12 at 11 am at the SOUP CoWork in Nanaimo.
This week Harris Tony Harris calls for more engagement between governments and the community on homelessness challenges.
“Moving people out of the downtown tent city and into supportive housing was the right decision, and I support the actions taken by BC Housing. As governments and the community take the next steps in tackling these challenges, the process needs to include meaningful engagement with neighbourhoods and residents. Those affected by government decisions must have a say in how those decisions are made.
Residents surrounding the new site locations are raising legitimate concerns including increased criminal activity such as vandalism and theft, as well as general concerns over children’s safety at Beban Park, said Harris in a news release today. He added that “homelessness is a complex issue, often rooted in mental health and addiction challenges”.
There are six candidates running for the Nanimo seat in the January 30 by-election, representing BC NDP, BC Green, BC Liberal, Conservative, Vancouver Island Party, and Libertarian.
Residents of the Nanaimo electoral district will vote in the by-election (for eligibility and voting place locaitons, see www.elections.bc.ca/nan-byelection ).
General Voting Day is Wednesday, January 30. Advance voting will be available from Tuesday, January 22 to Sunday, January 27. Eligible voters can also vote at the Nanaimo district electoral office from now until 4 p.m. on January 30, or by mail.
