Sitting outdoors in the sunlight at Poncho’s Cafe on this Saturday of the Thanksgiving long weekend, BC Green candidate Erin Cassels (Langford-Highlands) held casual conversations with several voters.

She held her meet-and-greet between 12:30 and 2:30 pm at the popular cafe on Goldstream Avenue in downtown Langford, right next to the Goudy Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library.

Conversations included transportation issues (the usual commuter congestion challenges) and a bit about sustainability (she has been recognized for her work in achieving zero waste).

Brand new to politics (she runs a hotel restaurant), in some ways Cassels seems to be a reluctant candidate. She only picked up her printed flyers yesterday, and will start door knocking this weekend. She admitted today that she’s still not used to being known in public.

But she’s a Langford resident and she was asked by the party, so she stepped up.

Three-way race:

The big race in Langford-Juan de Fuca is between the two heavy-hitters Ravi Parmar (BC NDP incumbent*) and Mike Harris (BC Conservative). [*Parmar was the MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca until the writ dropped on September 21, 2024; the new riding name is Langford-Highlands.]

Cassels says she will “stay involved for next time” if she doesn’t win the riding to become MLA in the October 19 election next weekend.

Pleasant personality:

Folks were comfortable sitting and talking with Cassels today. She was joined part-way through the afternoon by BC Green Party co-chair Adam Olsen (who is not seeking re-election).

Cassels is relaxed and approachable. People naturally gravitate to her in public.

The Erin Cassels rack card says she supports “a thriving province where everyone can flourish”.
