Today the BC Chief Coroner delivered a brief statement that will set a lot of information in motion.

BC Chief Coroner Dr Jatinder Baidwan delivered his statement in the press theatre at the BC Parliament Buildings and then took media questions.

A dark day:

He called February 10 in Tumbler Ridge “a dark day for British Columbia and Canada”, noting that six children lost their lives. The other three deaths were two adult victims and the shooter. All of it he called “a senseless act of violence” and “one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history”.

He said “the hairs on the back of his neck go up” when he recites the names of the dead. “It’s tragic,” said Dr Baidwan. He said it will be a long journey toward healing for those impacted by the events of February 10.

He noted the “bravery and compassion of those people who were there when these tragic events unfolded, as well as those who were among the first to respond to this crisis”. He noted selfless action in the midst of danger to try and save lives.

Reasons for an inquest:

He outlined his reasons in deciding to direct an inquest into the events that occurred in Tumbler Ridge on February 10, 2026 (see full text of BC Coroner’s announcement below) due to “the questions and concerns being raised by the community across British Columbia and throughout the country”.

The inquest will “publicly review the events that led to nine individuals losing their lives in Tumbler Ridge”.

The inquest is “an open independent forum that will examine the circumstances surrounding these nine deaths”. Any systemic or procedural issues will be identified and evidence-based recommendations will be made aimed at preventing similar loss of life in the future.

The Chief Coroner outlined his office’s unique role in “exploring deaths openly and thoroughly and in a way that maintains public confidence”.

The Coroner’s mandate includes promoting public safety.

Components of the inquest:

Baidwan outlined that aspects of “mental health, public safety and how future loss of life might be prevented” will be explored. Access to mental health supports in rural and remote areas (including crisis intervention and wrap-around supports) will be part of the inquiry, as well as the broader aspects of how mental health services and public safety systems work together.

Community awareness, education and support and matters relating to gender diversity will be within the scope of the inquiry, said Dr Baidwan.

Emergency response and coordination will also be reviewed including law enforcement and medical response, communication with the families and the school community, and opportunities to strengthen preparedness and response in rural settings, he outlined.

He says he has “reflected carefully and deeply on the events in Tumbler Ridge, on what led up to them, what took place, and the impact that followed and continues to do so”.

OpenAI, ChatGPT

How information is shared between online platforms and “emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence” and law enforcement, will be part of the inquest’s work.

Findings and recommendations:

“Findings and recommendations from the inquest will inform practice and inform safety and well-being n communities across British Columbia and Canada,” said Chief Coroner Baidwan today.

Identifying individuals in crisis:

“A key area of examination will be how individuals in crisis are identified and supported,” said Dr Baidwan.

It is known that the shooter had received mental health care through psychiatric services in Prince George (through Northern Health) and that that shooter’s (first) account on OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform was suspended for concerns about violence (though a second account was opened and not identified by OpenAI).

Police investigation:

Dr Baidwan said that a key component of information considered in the Coroner’s inquest will of course be from the police investigation process.

February 10, 2026

“On the afternoon of Feb. 10, 2026, an entire community was forever changed and multiple families who call Tumbler Ridge home received the catastrophic news that their loved ones had lost their lives.

“The news that an individual had killed two adults and six children in a private residence and a local secondary school quickly spread across national and international media. With that, came passionate public discussions about mental health and possible gaps in support systems.

“It is with this in mind that I have reflected on the BC Coroners Service’s responsibility to reinforce confidence in the system and support public safety in British Columbia when it comes to all sudden, unnatural and unexpected deaths, and all children’s deaths.

“That is why, pursuant to Section 18 of the Coroners Act, I am directing a coroner’s inquest to publicly review the circumstances that led to nine individuals losing their lives in Tumbler Ridge on Feb. 10.

“An inquest will provide an independent and transparent forum to publicly examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, assess systemic and procedural issues, and make evidence-based recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. Importantly, it will involve the participation of the people in British Columbia through a jury of five to seven people.

“My sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones. The grief they are experiencing at this time is unimaginable. The BC Coroners Service will continue to work with the families and the community of Tumbler Ridge to make sure their needs are met and their questions answered.

“An announcement with more details about the timing of the inquest will be provided once our investigative phase is concluded.”
