Alistair MacGregor’s federal riding of Cowichan-Malahat-Langford encompasses a wide swatch of south Vancouver Island, from east side to west.
MacGregor’s constituency office is in Duncan. He’s been the MP for this area since 2015. A few years ago his second office in Langford was closed to help save costs, as there was very little walk-in use by the public, MacGregor said today.
Today MacGregor attended the Langford Community Fun Day held on the school grounds at Ruth King Elementary in central Langford. The event was attended by Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson and councillors. A big crowd of families and local leaders in business and community showed up to join the fun.
The event was to launch an extended period of public engagement to explore the public’s view and get specific input on 10 master plans that are being fleshed out to help guide the city’s development from the current population of just over 50,000 to where it will be with 100,000 population in the years ahead.
Long-term development and growth of the city is this council’s goal — the mayor and all but one councillor are new to politics as of 2022. They want the residents to embrace change and experience an enhanced quality of life.
Over the next 18 months, members of the public will have the opportunity to provide input to the official community plan and at least 10 master plans and strategies that are being developed by third-party consultants, including Transportation, Active Transportation, Parks (which includes the Urban Forest Management master plan), Economic Development, Arts and Culture Plan, Climate Action, and Asset Management.
Seeking re-election in 2025:
Alistair MacGregor is seeking re-election in Cowichan-Malahat-Langford in the next federal elections (which is currently scheduled for October 20, 2025). He is the federal NDP’s Critic for Agriculture and Agri-Food, Food Price Inflation, and Deputy Critic for Justice.
MacGregor in chatting with Mayor Goodmanson mentioned his Bill C-277 that will see a national strategy around support those for with brain injury, something that garnered unanimous support in the House of Commons last month.
During this summer break from the Parliamentary session, he — like all other MPs — is out meeting constituents and connecting with groups and businesses across their ridings. MacGregor attended five events on Canada Day, and attended Duncan Days last weekend.
MacGregor was first elected in 2015, then again in 2019 and 2021, successively increasing his percentage of the popular vote from 35.94% to 36.06% to 42.8% across those three elections.
In 2021 the second-place vote in Cowichan-Malahat-Langford was split by Conservative and Liberal. In 2019 the second-place vote was split by Conservative and Green. In 2015 the second place vote was split by Liberal and Conservative.
