Conservative MP Matthew (Matt) James Arthur Jeneroux (Edmonton Riverbend) announced his resignation today November 6, 2025.
He was first elected in 2015, again in 2019, 2021 and 2025.
This comes as the Conservatives prepare to vote in the House of Commons against the Liberal government’s Budget 2025.
And it comes just one day after Conservative MP Chris d’Entremont crossed the floor to the Liberals which dropped the Conservative 144 seat count by one down to 143.
Jeneroux cites family reasons for his resignation. It’s unclear whether he will still participate in the Budget vote; he is staying on until spring 2026 and reportedly will give one more statement in the House of Commons and he is .

“Thank you Matt Jeneroux for your decade of service to the people of Edmonton Riverbend. On behalf of our Conservative team, I wish you and your family all the best following your decision to step down as a Member of Parliament next spring,” said Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in social media today.
Budget vote:
The budget bill vote is expected to take place during the week of November 17.

Getting a majority vote:
The Liberals have a minority government, so they need votes from other parties in order to see their budget bill passed.
There are 343 seats in the 45th Parliament. With d’Entremont having crossed the floor, the Liberals have 170 MPs, the Conservatives 143, Bloc Québécois 22, NDP 7, Green 1.
A majority vote on the Budget will require 172 votes. If the timing of Jeneroux’s resignation means that he won’t be voting on the budget, then the Conservatives will only have 142 votes against the Budget. The Bloc (with 22 seats) say they will be voting against the budget.
The Liberals will need two votes from the NDP (or 1 NDP and 1 Green) in order to get their Budget 2025 bill passed.
Conservative leadership:
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is up for leadership review in January 2026. He has now lost two MPs in one week, and there are rumours of more defections from the Conservative ranks to come according to reports on national TV media.
By-election:
Jeneroux’s resignation will prompt a by-election in the Alberta riding of Edmonton Riverbend. He was re-elected in 2025 by a relatively narrow margin of five percentage points over his Liberal opponent in the April 28, 2025 federal election.
