On February 23, Air Canada posted on their website about “civil unrest in Mexico”.
This comes after a targeted take-out of a drug gang leader by US operators.
Mexico’s president said in her daily press conference that things would settle down soon.
Mexico and the United States are soon to be host countries for many of the FIFA 2026 World Cup games (some will also be held in Canada — in Vancouver and Toronto), this coming summer.
The Mexican economy includes a thriving tourism and resort business, with many Canadians as part of a ‘snow bird’ winter-season residency and otherwise people who fly to Mexico for short vacations. Resorts and condos owned by foreign visitor are often sequestered out of range of the regular living areas of Mexico.
Current updates:
As of 3:35 am PT on Wednesday February 25 there is no further update posted on the Air Canada website (the February 23 bulletin is the most recent).
Air Canada flights out of Mexico:
On Monday (February 23) Air Canada said that “flights will resume with a modified schedule to and from Puerto Vallarta (PVR) on Tuesday, February 24, and to and from Guadalajara (GDL) on Wednesday, February 25”.
The airline has added seats to their schedule “to get you home sooner”.
Passengers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
Making flight changes:
If an Air Canada passenger currently has a reservation for travel to, from or through Puerto Vallarta (PVR) or Guadalajara (GDL), Air Canada has also implemented a policy that makes it possible to make voluntary itinerary changes if:
- You purchased an Air Canada ticket no later than February 22, 2026, for travel between February 24 and 28, 2026.
If you’re scheduled to travel during the affected period, you can retrieve your booking to change your flight, free of charge, to another date up to seven (7) days from your original travel date, subject to availability in the cabin you originally purchased. Outside of those dates, any fare difference will apply.

Anyone who purchased their ticket with Air Canada Vacations, please contact them directly at 1-800-296-3408.
