BC Greens Leader Sonia Furstenau this evening of the 42nd BC Provincial General Election released the following statement on the election results.

Like the other party leaders, Furstenau was careful not to be too exuberant about the results given that at least 500,000 mail-in ballots have yet to be counted (which could take up to three weeks).

“I’m honoured that voters have chosen to return a BC Green Caucus to the Legislature,” said Furstenau.

“We will continue to work collaboratively to support British Columbians through the pandemic, as well as to hold the government to account on the issues that matter most to them.

“These results show that our message is resonating with British Columbians and we are expanding our appeal off Vancouver Island. The NDP engineered this election to get a majority and wipe out their opponents. What these results are showing is that the British Columbians are not willing to give the government a pass on things like climate change, old growth protections, the Site C dam and the holes in the COVID recovery plan. The BC Greens will work every day to build a more sustainable, equitable province.

“I congratulate all the MLAs that were elected today, as well as those who will find out the results in the coming weeks. I look forward to working with you to build a stronger province.”

BC Green Leader Sonia Furstenau has been re-elected in her riding of Cowichan Valley. Adam Olsen was re-elected in Saanich North and The Islands. A new third Green — Jeremy Valeriote — is projected to defeat the Liberals in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky. That means achieving a Green seat on the mainland.
