Today Monday March 16 Prime Minister Trudeau in a widely broadcast/livestreamed address to Canadians said that all incoming travel to Canada is blocked to non-citizens.
All foreign nationals from everywhere around the world no longer have access to Canada; more to come on this in the days ahead.
Canadians who are still abroad should now return home to Canada, said Trudeau. Commercial flights may not be available indefinitely.
If people aren’t feeling well they cannot get on flights from abroad to Canada. Crews and diplomats can get on the flights. Airline companies will have a formal assessment for every passenger. Any person showing symptoms will not be able to come to Canada.
“We can still slow the virus, but that window is closing. It’s time to take every precaution to keep people safe,” the prime minister said.
Canadians are being asked to self-isolate now, as a way to protect themselves and their families.
Further announcements in the coming days will address the financial needs of families for groceries and paying rent.
Already $10 billion has been announced for making more credit available to businesses, said Trudeau, and there will be more to come. In time, more will also be spent to rebuild confidence in the economy as the health scenario returns to normal.
Daily updates from the federal health minister will start tomorrow March 17.
