One of the vessels on the Tsawwassen (Vancouver) – Swartz Bay (Victoria) route is currently holding in dock due to mechanical difficulty, as reported by BC Ferries at 9:50 am this morning.
Engineers are investigating the propulsion system issue, says BC Ferries.
Meanwhile, the following sailings were at first listed as “at risk of cancellation”, but then fully cancelled (as advised at 11:01 am).
Sailings Cancelled (earilier at Risk of Cancellation):
> 10:00 am departing Tsawwassen
> 12:00 pm departing Swartz Bay
Other sailings on this route are expected to proceed as scheduled, starting with the 11:00 am departure from Tsawwassen, said BC Ferries in their first announcement.
“We know you have important places to be. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience,” says BC Ferries.
Busy route:
The Vancouver-Victoria route is the main route between the BC mainland and Vancouver Island (home to about one million people).
Impaired financial support:
Federal financial support for the BC routes is extremely low compared to support for the Atlantic region ferries, as reported by Island Social Trends in June 2025, and which the Capital Regional District is now stating (lately at their September 9 board meeting) as a priority to be addressed.
