It’s been 10 years since Cst Sarah Beckett went to work as a West Shore RCMP officer and never came home.
Since that fateful day in April 2016, Beckett — mother to two young sons — has been remembered in various ways including a playground in Langford that was opened in 2019 in her name and a memorial run in Langford that is now in its sixth year.
This year’s Sarah Beckett Memorial Run will be held on Sunday May 10, based at Starlight Stadium next to the Sarah Beckett Memorial Playground.
The memorial run is an annual 5K walk/run that serves as a fundraiser including for a scholarship for young adults who are interested in a policing career.
Last year, approximately 450 participants took part in the run event with 160 participating in the virtual event.
Last year the event raised $40,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of South Vancouver Island and $20,000 for the Goldstream Food Bank.
Registration prices:
The Sarah Beckett Memorial Run participant registration fee is $35 (children $15); virtual run $25.
Technical run shirts are available at additional cost.
Event activity:
Local businesses in the community will have booths set up with information and giveaways in a ‘business pavilion’, from 8 am to 12 noon. Coffee by Starbucks.
There will also be a live band, kids zone and food for sale.
