The City of Langford is developing a Climate Action Plan to prepare the community for the impacts of climate change and to reduce local greenhouse gas (GHG emissions).
In recent years in Langford there has been extreme heat, wildfire smoke, heavy rainfall and flooding, and longer dry periods. These events are expected to become more frequent and intense as the climate continues to change.
The Climate Action Plan is identified as a specific objective is the City of Langford 2023-2027 Council Strategic Plan. The Plan is intended to reflect the experiences and priorities of the people who live, work, visit and operate businesses in Langford.
Getting Langford in-step:
Communities around the world are taking steps to lower emissions from buildings, transportation, and daily activities to limit future impacts. Langford recognizes the need to do the same.
This Plan intends to outline a practical, flexible path toward making the Langford community and local economy more resilient to the effects of climate change today and in the years ahead.
Public input – survey Phase 1:
Phase 1 of the public engagement on the Climate Action Plan includes a survey that is open online to end of day (11:59 pm) on April 8, 2026.
How are you affected by climate change? Survey questions will explore these aspects (all questions are optional):
- Impacts on households, businesses, visitors and community organizations.
- Challenges faced by people and businesses.
- Actions residents and businesses are already taking to prepare for climate impacts and to reduce emissions in their homes and everyday lives.
- How the City can best support climate resilience, such as preparing for extreme heat, smoke, flooding, and reduced emissions from buildings, transportation, and daily activities.

Allow time to do this:
This survey is longer than most of the others that Langford has presented on their Let’s Chat Langford platform.
It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to go through the questions — aspects of climate change are both broad and detailed.
The upcoming Easter long weekend is a great time to do this Climate Action Plan Survey, if you will have the time.

This survey is front-loaded with demographics questions (age, location of residence, and details about workplace or business if operating in Langford) whereas all other surveys have presented the topic first then the demographics.
What concerns you most?
One of the key questions in the survey as about which impacts from climate-related events are you most concerned about, of which up to three (3) options can be selected:
- Health and well-being (physical or mental health, food security)
- Cultural practices, traditions, or access to culturally important places, foods, or medicines
- Homes, workplaces and buildings (comfort, safety, damage, or energy costs)
- Roads, utilities, and other infrastructure
- Natural environment (parks, forests, waterways, wildlife)
- Cost of living and household expenses
- Ability to earn an income and maintain employment
- Local businesses and economic stability (including lost revenue or business continuity)
- Community connection and social well-being
- Emergency response and public safety
- Insurance availability and affordability
One question asks what you may have done to prepare for any impacts of climate change and what things — if any — make it harder for you to prepare for or respond to climate‑related events.
Households are asked if there are any current barriers that make it challenging to reduce emissions in home energy use?
Businesses are asked if there are any barriers that make it difficult for the business to reduce energy use or emissions.
Phases 2 & 3:
After the survey is done, there will be a workshops with key interest groups and a council workshop.
A draft Climate Action Plan is expected to be presented to Council in August 2026, with adoption of a final plan targeted for September 2026.
That will have a plan in place ahead of the next municipal election which takes place in October 2026.
