The Supreme Court of Canada has annulled the April 28, 2025 federal election results for the Montreal-area riding of Terrebonne.
The Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste had won by one vote, according to Elections Canada vote-counting at the time.
Auguste has been serving on the Veterans Affairs Committee and has been Vice-Chair of the Canadian Branch of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie (CAPF).
Down by one seat:
This means the Liberals are down by one seat in the House of Commons, putting them at 167 seats (three seats short of a majority).
Carney is governing pretty much as if the Liberals have a majority, as noted by the federal NDP at 2025 year-end.
Bloc candidate challenged the 2025 result:
The 2025 Bloc Québécois candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné had challenged the results of the April 28 election.
She demanded a by-election after a Bloc Québécois supporter complained that she had tried to vote by mail using a special ballot that was never counted (it had been returned to her own mailbox due to a postal code error on the label supplied by Elections Canada).
It would have been natural to assume that the postal code error could have impacted the proper delivery of other special ballots as well.
Spring by-election(s):
A by-election must be held at least 36 days (up to 50 days) after the day the by-election is announced.
Prime Minister Carney will also be calling by-elections for two Toronto-area ridings: University-Rosedale (where Danielle Martin is the Liberal candidate) and Scarborough Southwest (from where former Trudeau Cabinet minister Bill Blair is leaving to take on a diplomatic appointment).
