BC Premier David Eby held a press conference this evening just after 8 pm, from his cabinet office in Vancouver.
He was accompanied by Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger.
The 20-minute media availability covered the basics of today’s tragic news about the shooting in Tumbler Ridge.
Ten people died in the shooting event: six on scene at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, one enroute from the school to hospital, two at a residence, and the shooter herself.
The shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as first reported by the local RCMP.
Eby said the event “unfolded in Tumbler Ridge this evening and over the course of the day”.
“Resources will be there for the community,” he said. “They’re already being deployed on site.”
Unimaginable tragedy:
“This is a devastating and unimaginable tragedy,” he said in his introductory remarks.
He itemized what RCMP had released earlier this evening — that 10 people are dead, and about 25 people who are injured are undergoing medical care, the Premier noted. Some of the injuries are “profoundly serious” and “some more minor injuries”, said Eby this evening.
For tonight it’s about the support that can be provided to the people directly involved in the shooting and the community, Eby purported.
RCMP update:
Premier Eby was updated by RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald.
“The RCMP has asked for patience as they work through methodically to ensure they are supporting families and getting to the bottom of what happened today,” said Premier Eby.
Prime Minister’s input:
Eby spoke with Prime Minister Mark Carney about “this terrible tragedy”. Carney issued a statement earlier this evening.
Long impact:
“This is the kind of thing that feels like it happens in other places,” said Premier Eby.
But he asked British Columbians and people across Canada to ‘wrap their love’ around the community of Tumbler Ridge tonight and in the days to come. “Not just tonight, but tomorrow and into the future,” said Eby. He said that this sort of event has a long impact. “It’s something that will reverberate for years to come.”
Mass shootings of course have direct impacts on those directly affected. but they also have historical weight. This is the second largest school shooting in Canada’s history (the 1989 massacre at a Montreal engineering polytechnic being the worst where 14 women were killed on site).
Public Safety Minister:
Minister Krieger said the local RCMP arrived on scene at the school within two minutes, a promptness which she feels saved lives.
She said that a psychiatric liaison nurse is on scene and that another will be arriving in Tumbler Ridge at 10 pm this evening.
BCEHS:
BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) provided some information to media later this evening.
BCEHS said that they had received a call about the shooting at the school at 1:22 pm MT today. Multiple resources were sent to the school. That included ground ambulance with primary care.
Two air ambulances were sent to the scene. One person was in critical condition, and one was in serious but stable condition.
A clinical operations area director was dispatched.
Unknowns:
As of 9:22 pm this evening, it’s still unknown whether it was teachers, students or both who are among the injured.
None of the identities of the victims (dead or injured) have been publicly released.
